Philip R. Hastings became one of the most important photographers of the North American railroad scene at mid-century, when the railroads were in transition from steam to diesel. At a time when most railroad photography consisted of three-quarter locomotive shots, Hastings' style embraced the entire railroad landscape. In his photographs, he placed the trains with a great understanding of what a railroad was. He focused on both the details and broad context of the railroads, as well as the railroaders that made it work. Hastings' photos caught the eye of David P. Morgan, longtime editor of TRAINS magazine. From a young age, Hastings regularly had his photographs published and soon became an influence to many other photographers. Hastings and Morgan developed a synergistic relationship between writer and photographer.
Hastings traveled extensively-sometimes with Morgan-throughout the United States and Canada to capture railroading and the final years of the steam locomotive. Among his travels were several trips to various parts of the mighty Pennsylvania Railroad. Built on solid engineering and massive capital investment, the Pennsy became the largest carrier of passengers and freight in the U. S., linking the major population and industrial centers of the East. In more than 800 images, Hastings depicted both the urban and rural landscapes of the vast Pennsy system.
Author Douglas Nelson has selected 145 of Hastings' most memorable black and white Pennsy images, many not previously published, presented here as a collection for the first time. Working from Hastings' notebooks and his own knowledge of the railroad, Nelson has created an absorbing sequence of detailed captions. The book is introduced by an introspective and perceptive narrative about Hastings and his body of work, accompanied by a brief history of the Pennsylvania Railroad. In the Foreword, Kevin P. Keefe, Associate Publisher of TRAINS magazine, has provided an engaging look at Hastings, his work for TRAINS, and his relationship with David P. Morgan. Photographer Jim Shaughnessy reflects with humor and grace in the Afterword about his longtime friendship with Hastings and their trips together to photograph trains.
This fine volume is printed in duotone black and white on high-quality matte stock, with accent colors for the maps and the Pennsy keystone logo. The binding is smythe-sewn with full-cloth covers.
