Philadelphia Improvements, The Part 2 September 1980 30th Street Station PRR

The Philadelphia Improvements Part 2 September 1980 30th Street Station Pennsylvania Railroad Technical & Historical Society  28 pages
As promised, this is the second installment regarding the Philadelphia Improvements project. The first installment covered the plan as it evolved in the Twenties and the construction of the center city Suburban Station. This part carries the story through the Depression into the Thirties with the details of 30th Street Station and the construction around that area.
The illustrations in this publication appear now because a few people took the time and interest to preserve history. Some did it professionally, others because they felt it was important. Most of the documentary photographs herein are the work of W. N. Jennings. W. N. Jennings has for me, come to be the Matthew Brady of the Philadelphia Improvements. The Jennings signature appears on thousands of photographs of Philadelphia taken during the first half of this century. Although most of the photographs are exciting to the historian, only some of the very best could be used because of limited space. They are available through the courtesy of Chapter members Garth Wise and William F. Beese, two people who also care about the preservation of history. The Chapter thanks them for their contribution and their patience during the delay between Parts I and II of this publication.
It is interesting that although this was one of the largest projects in Philadelphia's history, very little original material seems to be available. Except for these photographs, most research data was taken from newspapers and trade journals of the day. The latter, such as Railway Age and Baldwin Locomotives, appear through the courtesy of publisher Robert G. Lewis and collector and publisher Harry P. Albrecht respectively. Information about the construction of the suburban wing of 30th Street Station was obtained from an article by J. Walter May in the publication U.G.L Circle dated November, 1930.
