PENNSYLVANIA RAILROAD - A pictorial History    by Edwin P. Alexander

DUST JACKET  Copyright 1947 248 pages
Preface - Now that the Pennsylvania Railroad has passed its hundredth anniversary, the time is particularly appropriate for noting the more important events of its growth and progress.  The contents of this book constitute a summary of its history, rather than a full account - which would take volumes.  Coupled with the many rare and hitherto unpublished reproductions of old prints and other pictorial matter, it presents a story of how the Pennsylvania Railroad grew into the world's greatest transportation system.

Since the Pennsylvania continues to develop, its history cannot be complete; therefore somewhat more attention is given herein to its inception and early growth, most of the latter having taken place during its first thirty years (today, except for the acquisition of the Long Island Railroad and holdings in some Eastern roads, it serves essentially the same territory as it did in the 1870's).  Important too, are the System's contributions to railroading in general.  Many of today's standards - such as the air brake - were first tried and used on its lines, and their importance is not to be overlooked.

Often graphic comparison between early and modern locomotives, rolling stock, track, stations, bridges, and other features shows the continual progress and development better than a written description.  Therefore the illustrative material constitutes the major part of this sketch of the Pennsylvania Railroad, with out which it would never have been attempted.  With the exception of some contemporary photos furnished by courtesy of the railroad, nearly all the illustrations have come from the author's collection.
