The Pennsylvania Railroad is an organization of more than 60,000 people that provides transportation service. It carries freight and passengers, and operates almost 10,000 miles of lines from the Atlantic seaboard west to the Mississippi and from the Great Lakes south to the Ohio and Potomac Rivers. Nearly half the population of the United States and more than half of its production are centered in this area. The Pennsylvania helps meet the immense transportation needs of this region and links it, through rail and water connections, with the rest of the nation and the world.
Trains of the Pennsylvania Railroad carry 45 million passengers and move about 160 million tons of freight during a year. To perform these services, the company operates 2,686 diesel and electric locomotive units, 3,728 passenger cars, 137,800 freight cars, 23,000 miles of main line, branch and yard tracks, hundreds of stations, shops, piers and other facilities.
This booklet will give you a brief glimpse of some of the activities and equipment which provide PRR customers with the best in modern rail transportation.
