The year 1858 saw the beginning of standard width passenger cars on the Pennsylvania Railroad. Prior to that date passengers could not travel straight through from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh. The class Pa coach was adopted in 1862. All cars up to 1907 were of basic wood construction. In 1907, Pennsy engineers introduced the P70 design. It became the "Standard" design for nearly four decades, with hundreds of the class built during the period 1909 - 1936. Modernization as such, saw the introduction of a number of new lightweight cars but not in significant quantity until the class P85BR series of 1946-47 period Primarily, the Pennsy relied on its ability to rebuild the existing P70's. As you will see from the drawings, their variations are numerous. In fact, the P70 series alone baffles t Pennsy historian in trying to figure out all the variations experimented with by the Pennsy. Several hundred of the P70 coaches underwent renovation and rebuilding. Again, it is point out we know certain classes are missing in this series.
