Looking at a stack of PRRT&HS Keystone magazines more than three feet tall in my office, the immensity of the Pennsylvania Railroad (and all that has been written about it) comes to mind. To tackle a color portrayal of all the facilities of the mighty PRR - the very infrastructure that gave both purpose and means to this transportation colossus - is a seemingly impossible task some 40 years after the company disappeared into the Penn Central morass. An overwhelming task considering "what was built" vs. "what was actually recorded in good color." Yet we'll try in this and succeeding volumes to show the reader something else great about the PRR; something beyond K4's, E8's, TrucTrains and the BROADWAY LIMITED. As a private institution, the Pennsylvania Railroad was without equal in engineering, arguably number one and certainly as a builder of infrastructure, at one time entirely worthy of a title like Standard Railroad of the World.
?An all-rail ride to the Big Apple was PRR President Alexander Cassatts goal and he accomplished it by 1910 with remarkable construction achievements. See the vital east end of the New York Division in full color through its facilities ranging from the incomparable Penn Station New York to a lowly block station in Waverly Yard.
