Our motive power study of the PRR in "Pennsylvania Railroad Color Pictorial Volume III" looks at the steam locomotive classes operating during the 1940's and 1950's. In Volume I we reviewed the diesel cab unit models purchased and operated by the PRR, and in Volume II the electric "motors" designed and used in the electrified territory was featured. For many years, PRR's steam power was very conservative and followed the basic wheel arrangements from 0-4-0 to 2-10-2 during the 1920's and 1930's. The return of traffic in early 1940 and World War II wartime tonnage levels required new power in the form of J1 2-10-4's and passenger T1 4-4-4-4 Duplexes. With only eighteen diesel switchers added to the roster during the war years, Pennsy steam power and electrics took the overtime load during World War II. We will review this steam power by class from the B6 0-6-0 to the mighty J1 2-10-4 for freight operations and the E6 4-4-2 to the streamlined T1 4-4-4-4 for the passenger varnish in this introduction to our all-color book.
