INTRODUCTION
When the words Pennsylvania and railroad are spoken together, they bring to mind a variety of images. And once it is clear that "Pennsylvania" refers not to a single railroad, but to the lines of an entire state, then the range and power of the images are greatly increased.
But, where does one start in discussing the railroads, past and present, of the "Keystone State?" Is it in the steel manufacturing centers, where slow "drags" of coal, and finished beams and bars creak over the moaning rails leading into and out of places such as Pittsburgh?
How about the great railroad shop towns: Altoona, Renovo, Sayre, and Scranton? In these places, every piece and part of the railroads' motive power and rolling stock was repaired, sometimes built, and even scrapped. And who can forget that Philadelphia was once home to the Baldwin Locomotive Works, while Erie today hosts the large General Electric diesel plant?
What about Philadelphia? Every hour, trains speed off to New York, Washington, Harrisburg, and beyond, while local commuter trains and trolley cars ferry people between downtown and suburban centers such as Paoli.
Then there are the mountains. While lacking the more impressive heights of such places as Colorado, mountain railroading in Pennsylvania means greater amounts of freight moving through more populated areas and through terrain criss-crossed by rivers and streams.
Mining operations; the pastoral, rolling countryside, with its farms and fields, and small towns with names such as Coudersport, Rockhill Furnace, and Sinking Spring; the great freight classification centers in Conway and Enola, where tracks full of cars stretch for miles; the quiet little branch lines; and the trolley car systems in places such as Johnstown and Scranton-all are aspects of Pennsylvania railroading images as well.
The names of railroads, engines, and trains also add to the images-from the short lines, with magical names such as the East Broad Top, the "Ma & Pa," and the "WAG," to the many varieties of engines, the K4s, "3300s," GG1s, F7s, and the new and modern C40-8Ws. And who could forget such name trains as the legendary Broadway Limited and the Twentieth Century Limited?
And there is more-the one railroad that shares the same name as the state, the line that ran through every part of the state. Even though the railroad was a major transportation force in the Mid-Atlantic and Midwest, it was often perceived as being synonomous with the state. This last point had to be a difficult notion for its public relations people though, who related to it, in a more lofty sense, as the "Standard Railroad of the World."
These and still other images make up the world of Pennsulvania Bu Rail, which we will commemorate in this, the first of a series of books.
