THE Pennsylvania Railroad became one of the principal units of the transportation system
in the United States. Its growth and development touched our national life at many different points and contributed measurably to the evolution of the country's industrial efficiency and economic pattern. The story of the Pennsylvania Railroad is that of an American business enterprise in the field of public service. Our work herein focuses on the steam locomotives of this railroad and associated companies that toiled from the mid-nineteenth century until the last fireboxes went cold in the late 1950's.
Consider first, however, the expansion started in the nineteenth century that brought the Compato the Chicago and St. Louis gateways among other places. From the root system in the state of Pennsylvania, expansion went in all directions.
In the east, the Northern Central brought into the System a well placed rail route from Great Lakes water transportation on Lake Ontario to the tidewater at the Port of Baltimore, serving along the way, such growing cities as Elmira, N.Y., and Williamsport and Sunbury, Pa. By way of the line of the Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington Railroad, the Company extended its service from Philadelphia to the Nation's Capital. With the Philadelphia and Trenton Railroad and the rail lines of the United New Jersey Railroad and Canal Company, its service was extended from Philadelphia to Jersey City and New York City.
