Nineteen Hundred and Forty Seven to Nineteen Hundred and Sixty Eight is but twenty one years, a mere glimmering in the scheme of things. To those who fmd the passage of time enlivened by the fascinations of railroading, however, it was the two decades in which steam uncoupled from the head-end forever, giving up its charge to an entirely new species, named diesel. As in any other new field, many companies jump into the fray attempting to wrest a share of the market and the results of their endeavors are often intriguing. No other railroad indulged itself in the vagaries of such builders more than the Standard Railroad of the World itself, the erstwhile Pennsylvania System. Ranging far and wide from the Northeast through the Midwest, the Pennsy fielded these newfangled machines at hundreds of different tasks, often specially suited for that breed and that breed alone. And since the Pennsy operated through a historic, beautiful part of this great land of ours, a rare chance opened for the railfan during the years 1947-1968. They were the years when the most unbelievable diesels were commonplace, everyday workhorses. They were the years when an approaching headlite could be borne by a PA, Shark, F3, or Erie-built. They were the Pennsy Diesel Years.
