One Day On The Road 244

In 1968 a railroad was created that would change the destiny of American Railroading for all time. Instead of being welcomed into railroading's hallowed halls of nostalgia and fan endearment, the new road found itself ceaslessly scorned as it struggled to weld two great systems into one. Improperly planned, inadequately financed in a very tough business, and beset with headquarter's hijinks that could make a good TV situation comedy, the new road was immediately saddled with numerous major problems. While struggling to gain a solid footing, during its first year of life, the bureaucrats in our capitol decided to unload one of their biggest headaches on the new company: a bankrupt major railroad, that had no chance to operate profitably. The fans who normally embrace any carrier in their region, maligned the new company for the "blackness" it poured over their beloved Pennsy, Central, and New Haven. Finally, when this firm toppled to the ground in bankruptcy after only a scant 2 years of existence, it evoked not a bit of sympathy. Instead the butt of jokes, the target of bitter derision, still unforgiven to this day by many, the new company was to continue operating trains for another 6 years under the Bankruptcy Act. This Company was the Penn Central.
Feelings still run deep at the mere mention of the name Penn Central. Everyone has an opinion of the Company; few good. As any part of our history, however, good or bad, it cannot be ignored.
This book is a look at the myriad diesel and electric locomotives of that forlorn carrier. It does not ask you to forgive Penn Central, merely to examine some great railroading that was largely ignored while it was going on. Serving as it did, the most populous areas of America in the early 1970's, the black locomotives of Penn Central are indelibly etched in the memories of thousands of Americans, many of whom found their first love of railroading at the side of Penn Central tracks.
