INTRODUCTION
Central Vermont Passenger Equipment
The Central Vermont Railway had been controlled by the Grand Trunk Railway of Canada since 1898, but operated independently. Subsequent successor to the Grand Trunk was the Canadian National in 1923. The Central Vermont had a small fleet of passenger equipment to serve the local needs of railway, but this fleet was also supplemented by CN and GTW cars from time to time. By 1950, passenger revenue amounted to $678,527 and the passenger car fleet included five coaches and thirty-nine head-end cars.
In 1905, ACF built coaches #381-384 for the Central Vermont. These seventy-three foot long coaches had a wooden carbody, a steel underframe and six-wheel trucks. Passenger capacity was sixty-four in the coach section and twelve in the smoking area. All four cars were steel-plated between 1924 and 1931. These coaches were followed by ACF's delivery of coaches #385-390 in 1912. This group also had a wooden car-body, steel underframe and six-wheel trucks, but the seating provided for sixty in the coach section and twelve in the smoking area. Central Vermont coaches #386 and 387 were steel plated in 1926 and #383384 in December 1931.
Two more coaches were numbered into the 300 series with CV #220-221 becoming #391 and 392. Built by ACF in 1905 as seventy-three-foot long wooden cars with steel underframes, both cars were steel plated in December 1931. Coach #391 went to the Canadian National #4958 in April 1948 and #392 retired at St. Albans in April 1957 with scrapping at Battle Creek in August. Both rode on six-wheel trucks and originally seated fifty-six in the coach section and fifteen in the smoking area. CV #393, ex PRR #4859, had been purchased by the CV after wrecking the car at Sharon, Vermont, on June 20, 1924.
For mail cars, the CV owned two, #30-31, built by ACF in 1914 with underframes and wooden
