The People
The Wild Life
For over three months, Hank Curth roamed through the Territory of Papua and New Guinea to capture the breathtaking beauty of this fascinating land, the daily life of its people, and the uniqueness of its wild life in pictures and sounds. The photographs in this book were chosen from over five thousand taken by the author during his exciting and sometimes adventurous journey.
Travelling by commercial and chartered aircraft, trucks, landrovers, jeeps, native canoes, inter-island freighters and helicopters, Hank Curth covered thousands of miles of this partly unexplored area where twentieth century civilization lives side by side with ancient Stone Age cultures.
Off the coast of Madang he joined marine biologists on a whale hunting expedition in the Bismarck Sea. On Bougainville he flew in helicopters and rode on trucks to photograph the building of new roads across incredibly rugged mountain ranges. With scientists he climbed the mountains near Wau to study the wild life and flora in moss forests. He spent weeks on the Ramu and Sepik Rivers using fifty-foot-long native canoes for transportation, and lived in local villages to observe the unusual and ancient art of wood carving.
To add the dimension of sound to this photographic book the author collected hours of tape recordings in order to produce the 33 RPM seven inch record of the sounds of Papua and New Guinea contained on the inside cover of this book.
