The first Pacific locomotive was built in the United States in 1886, but it was not until 22 years later that a Pacific engine was seen in Britain. This was The Great Bear, designed by Mr. G. J. Churchward, and first put into service in 1908.
Since then more than 400 Pacific locomotives have been constructed in England, and the author tells the fascinating story of the many different types. He compares their dimensions and their performance on the track, writing on the subject with authority and with an obvious affection for the steam locomotive.
The Foreword has been contributed by Mr. R. A. Riddles, formerly full-time member of the Railway Executive responsible for mechanical and electrical engineering, and President of the Institute of Locomotive Engineers in 1950-51. He says of the book: The author, in his interesting study of the Pacific locomotive, has recorded a most valuable history of their development, trials, troubles and successes."
