In today's motorized society, there is developing a need for some type of swift, economical transportation, to take on the burden of our present traffic requirements and the unimaginable, nightmarish transportation problems resulting from today's population explosion.
At one time in the recent past, the beginning of a solution to transit strangulation in Los Angeles was at hand, and had not political pressure, public apathy and the basic human fraility to grab while you can, with no thought to the future, won the upper hand, perhaps Los Angeles would today be an example of transportation efficiency, instead of the pathetic parking lot of confusion it now is.
But what of the old network of electric cars that used to be ? The name that keeps reappearing in the conversations, thoughts and historical material of our era is the Pacific Electric Railway, the dream of one far sighted American capitalist, Henry E. Huntington.
The Pacific Electric, born in 1901, grew like a well cared for weed, for several years, until its octopus-like shape was completed. But as time progressed, parts of the plant withered and died.
Perhaps it was management, with lack of foresight, that killed it, perhaps the increasing demands of labor, many blame a large locally owned newspaper for killing the "east bypass" overhead terminal plan, that would have taken P.E. trains off the city streets and sped them to their own large terminal building.
Let us now glance into the past, to look at the days when men of vision and ability were the order of the day, when it was just plain fun to ride the big red cars of the Pacific Electric Railway.
