FOREWORD & ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
am grateful for and appreciative of the reception of the Pacific Electric in Color, Volume I. Apparently the book filled a void for Pacific Electric information. It is hoped that this second volume can add to the interest developed in Volume One. Thanks to those who have written, discussed and/or called with their comments and suggestions, both positive and negative. I have endeavored to consider all information to make this (and future endeavors) a better product. One suggestion was for the inclusion of an outline history, which has been included as a revised and paraphrased account that originally appeared in the P.E. pamphlet "This Is Pacific Electric" published in 1952.
The publisher and author would like to state that an error was made in photo credits in Volume I. All photos credited to Emery Gulash were actually taken by Eugene Van Dusen, except for the top photo on page 34. We regret not properly acknowledging the fine work of Gene Van Dusen.
This is not a history or thorough review of the Pacific Electric. It is an attempt to give hints of the flavor and variety of this large railway. The focus is on the system in the years after World War Two, when color photography came into more general use. The material selected for publication is intended to augment that presented in Volume One as well as stand alone. The emphasis in Volume One focused on rolling stock, which this volume is oriented on the routes, ranging from multracked lines with heavy intercity passenger and freight service to weedy and quiet streaks of rust that saw infrequent use. Such contrasts were among the fascination of the Pacific Electric. In addition, material is presented on the Torrance Shops (which has received scant attention in the past), non-powered freight and maintenance of way rolling stock, and a sampling of the motor coach fleet.
I have attempted to select representative views of areas that were not covered in the first volume. However, not all locations or subjects seem to have been photographed (or slides made available to the author and publisher). Hopefully, additional photographic material will be forthcoming for future color books on the "World's Greatest Interurban System".
I would like to offer my thanks again to several people who have given special inspiration and encouragement. First of all, to my wife Virginia, for having supported my transportation interests. To Eli Bail, author of From Railway to Freeway and editorial consultant for Motor Coach Age who has enthusiastically rekindled a fascination with the Pacific Electric. To Joe Strapac, Shade Tree Books author and publisher whose long friendship and writing talents have been an inspiration. Joe and his many friends have opened a number of doors to me in the quest for information and photographs on the PE. To John Kirchner, a good friend and transportation professional, whose research and writing skills have provided a model of what can be accomplished in railroad history, no matter how obscure or far away the subject. To Pat Ellyson, long time Orange Empire Railway Museum member and volunteer whose infectious enthusiasm and knowledge were both a prod and guide to learning more on PE history. To Ken Douglas, engineer and former Navy Officer, who took time away from his own extensive research and writing projects on the Pennsylvania Railroad to assist the writer with access to his slide collection and memories of his Pacific Electric experiences. To Donald Duke, historian, photographer and publisher of Golden West Books who generously assisted the author with advice, inspiration and access to his research library.
I would also like to acknowledge the influence of the late Ira Swett, noted author and historian, whose friendship, kindness and incredible output of publications on electric railways has enriched us all. I would also like to mention those who have been of material assistance to me over the years and on this specific project: Ken Ardinger, Eli Bail, Ray Ballash, Alfred E. Barker, Gary Boughton, Kurt Brokhausen, Jim Buckley, Reg Carter, Herb Cearley, Al Chione, Ken Douglas, Donald Duke, Pat Ellyson, Dave Garcia, Jim Gibson, Sanford Goodrick, Emery Gulash, Jim Harrison, Paul Hunnell, Jim Husing, William C. Janssen, John Kirchner, Jim Konas, Fred Matthews, Edward S. Miller, Jeff Moreau, Eric Sanders, John Shaw, Wally Shidler, Jerry Squier, Henry Stange, Don Strack, Joe Strapac, Gene Van Dusen, Jim Walker, Ray Younghans and Morning Sun Books publisher Bob Yanosey.
Many others, impossible to list here, have helped me in uncountable ways. To all of you I apologize and offer my most since appreciation and gratitude. I would also like to acknowledge the efforts of the founders and members of the Orange Empire Railway Museum. Through their efforts, they have managed to preserve for future generations records, rolling stock and the history of the world's largest interurban system.
