There was no doubt that good transportation was needed to bind the new nation together, to encourage settlement of new regions and to make trade possible and profitable. The answer came with the invention of the steam engine in Great Britian. Soon, inventors on both sides of the ocean were working together to put this new power source on wheels and to put the wheels on rails.
