DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION
The Edwardian decade saw our railways at the height of their
glory, when efficiency, technical ingenuity and skills of all kinds and
commercial enterprise were combined with colourful (in every sense)
individuality and —for that age—high speed. In his racy accounts of the
"first eleven" English, the five Scottish and the London Underground
lines as they were in 1910, W. J. Gordon created a vivid portrait of the end of
a Golden Age, now reprinted by photo-lithography after half-acentury and on the
eve of changes which may make the British railway system unrecognisable to
those who found such delight in the original publication. Apart from the
interest of the information on practices of 50 years ago, much of this is yet
applicable to railways today. The book is rich in historical data and
anecdotes, and the many photographs, including motive power and rolling stock,
preserve features and scenes which have gone or are about to go for ever.
