FOREWORD
Farther and farther recede into the past the nostalgic horse and buggy days when life was safer, simpler, and slower, though no less sound and sure; when canoeing on the Charles River, cutting ice on the pond, and riding to school and parties by barge and pung gave satisfactions unsurpassed even today by the jet and space ages that are lifting us into the dawn of new eras ahead.
As the Town of Weston, twelve miles " out of Boston " in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, approached the commemoration in 1963 of its incorporation two hundred and fifty years before, its " I REMEMBER WHEN " Committee set out to collect and review memories and memorabilia that it felt would stimulate its citizenry, old and new, to a vital appreciation of what, in addition to our woods and fields, has contributed so much in preserving Weston as a charming and congenial place in which to work, play, and live together. To tap the minds of " old-timers " who grew up in town entailed not only countless local interviews but dozens of communications to and from all parts of the land.
The anecdotes proved so overwhelming and thrilling that the committee almost instantly decided that here would be a word picture whose portrayal should not alone be confined to, and enjoyed by, those who were able to attend the four-day festivities in May. And so " ONCE UPON A PUNG " was born! A group of private citizens anonymously underwrote the cost of publication so that it could be available not only at the time of the Celebration but also for many years to come.
Here, then, is a word-digest of the anecdotes that came to us from the " old-timers." They have told us what they did when they were young and " growing up in Weston back in the nineties and the early decades of this century. Each contributor helped to make this book what it is: a colorful review of earlier days, habits, and times. Each has given us his or her own version of events, customs, and people. No doubt some are incomplete - and, yes, inaccurate in one detail or another - but they came to us basically in this form. Hence, anxious to share them with you, we invite you to read them in the same spirit of friendship and fun. You, equally with us, will judge to what extent these tales of yesteryear are factual, fanciful, or fictional.
Above all, we do agree and affirm that here was and is a community of worthwhile, friendly people who lived, loved, labored, and worshipped together from the earliest times and made our town an exceptional and good New England community. In the spirit of our " old-timers," living and dead, pray accept this feeble effort to preserve - for contemporaries and posterity - something of the essence of those four days in May 1963 when we paused at the end of twenty-five decades to count again the innumerable blessings and privileges of being fellow-townsmen in Weston.
