What Is a Streetcar?
Long before there were automobiles to take us to the grocery store or to the clothing store or to our daily jobs downtown or elsewhere, there were streetcars to ride. Long before there were buses, too, there were streetcars. They were big (and sometimes not so big) vehicles which ran on tracks down the centers of the streets. We paid our fares, and we rode to almost anywhere we needed or wanted to go.
What Made Streetcars Run?
In the very early years when the calendar still said 1870 or 1880, horses and mules pulled the streetcars down the streets. They were slow. When the 20th Century arrived, streetcars were powered with electric motors. The electricity came from wires which were suspended over the tracks in the streets. A long pole with a rolling trolley wheel was forced upward by powerful springs so that the trolley wheel rode along the underside of the overhead wire. The electricity was in this way transferred to the motors under the cars.
Where Did Streetcars Go?
Streetcars traveled on almost every street in downtown Omaha and along many downtown streets in Council Bluffs. From downtown (where years ago almost everybody worked or shopped) the carlines fanned out to virtually every neighborhood. Streetcars were fun to ride. When the weather was hot we opened the large windows to catch the breeze. When the weather was cold we welcomed every bit of heat the cars could offer. Streetcars were fun to ride.
