Again we return to "The Switzerland of America", at Mauch Chunk, the county seat of Carbon County, Pennsylvania. The town of Mauch Chunk owes its origin to the enterprise of the (Old Company) The Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company, which formerly owned the ground upon which it is located. The town was started in 1818, and from this point the first anthracite coal was shipped to market, it being floated down the river in arks to the Delaware River at Easton and thence to Philadelphia. From this nucleus grew the Lehigh Canal, and in the succeeding years with the development of the coal industry followed the railroads.
Thousands of excursionists were hauled over both the Lehigh Valley Railroad and Central Railroad of New Jersey to the Commonwealth's most popular vacation resort, nestled deep in the Lehigh River canyon. People came from Philadelphia and New York for a ride over the famous MAUCH CHUNK, SUMMIT HILL AND SWITCHBACK RAILROAD from 1870, when it had been abandoned for the purpose of hauling anthracite coal from Summit Hill to Mauch Chunk, nine miles, and has been used since exclusively as a pleasure road.
As the motive power of this road was gravity, except stationary coal burning engines were used for power in the engine houses of the two incline planes for hauling the car from the bottom of the plane to the top, then the car ran by gravity.
