Foreword
THE QUINCY MINE HOIST ASSOCIATION, INC, is a Michigan nonprofit corporation formed to preserve these engineering marvels of mining in the Lake Superior region: the Nordberg Manufacturing Company hoist, the hoist house, and shaft-rock house at the Quincy Mining Company's No. 2 shaft. The Upper Peninsula Section of the American Institute of Mining Engineers (A.I.M.E.) initially asked the Quincy Mining Company for a lease on the land, buildings, and equipment. Out of this effort evolved the Quincy Mine Hoist Association, whose principals, in addition to Quincy and the A.I.M.E., are the Nordberg Company (now Rexnord), Michigan Technological University, and the public at large.
Over the years we have raised money, restored the hoist, and placed it on the National Register of Historic Places. We have repaired the buildings, added interior displays, and opened the hoist to tourists during summer months.
We have reprinted Murdock's Boom Copper, but have always had the desire to see a book about the Quincy Mining Company. The Historic American Engineering Record (HAER) inventoried historic works of engineering and industry in the Upper Peninsula in 1977. When HAER returned a year later to focus on Quincy in more detail, we worked closely with the two principals, Dr. Larry Lankton and Dr. Charles Hyde. They are two naturals to coauthor this book.
