Religious paintings are balanced by a variety of portraits and landscapes and studies of animals, flowers and still lifes. Byzantine mosaics decorated early basilicas. Later secular figures dressed in the fashion of the day were inserted as pious donors into painted scenes depicting incidents in the life of the Holy Family, various saints or biblical characters. The nameless horrors of the other world were depicted by some artists with savage realism. With the age of discovery the luxuries of the Orient were assimilated into daily life and reflected in the paintings of princely wardrobes and interiors. Robust scenes of peasant life were the choice of painters of the genre school. Pastoral scenes set in vast parks were brightened by gallants in gay ribbons. Cardinals, baby princes, masked ladies and country squires were among the subjects of portrait painters, who sought to capture them on canvas. The panorama of old masters is concluded with the Spain of Goya.
