The Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen dates its organization from September 23, 1883, but the preliminary steps were taken some time before by the brakemen and switchmen employed on the Delaware & Hudson at Albany, N. Y., who, in the early part of 1883, organized the Capital City Aid Association, having for its principal object the payment of benefits during the time of sickness or disability of its members. The idea immediately found favor among the employees of the system, and in June of the same year eight brakemen living at Oneonto, N. Y., all employees of the Delaware & Hudson, held a meeting in a caboose and arranged to form an association to become a part of the one organized at Albany. Through a misunderstanding the co-operation never became effective, and the men at Oneonto organized in July, 1883, an association which they named Oneonto Lodge, of the Brotherhood of Railroad Brakemen. This organization, while intended to be purely a local affair, soon attained a very numerous membership, and the fact that the organization had been perfected was pretty thoroughly advertised throughout the country. The trainmen and switchmen had for a long time realized the necessity for an organzation of this kind, and commenced corresponding with the lodge at Oneonto.
So many letters inquiring into the purposes of the organization were received, and so much encouragement was given to it, that it was decided to attempt the organization of a national body, and, in furtherance of this idea, a meeting was held September 23, 1883, at Oneonto, N. Y., and the Grand Lodge of the Brotherhood of Railroad Brakemen was organized, and the Oneonto Lodge was named Lodge No. 1 of the Brotherhood of Railroad Brakemen. George Hudson was elected Grand Master, C. J. Woodworth, Vice-Grand Master, and Union C. Osterhout, Grand Secretary and Treasurer ; and in this manner the Brotherhood was launched, and for these avowed purposes as set forth in the preamble to the Constitution : " To unite the railroad brakemen ; to promote their general welfare and advance their interests - social, moral and intellectual ; to protect their families by the exercise of a systematic benevolence. Persuaded that it is for the interests both of our members and their employers, and a good understanding should at all times exist between the two. It will be the constant aim of this organization to establish mutual confidence and maintain harmonious relations."
