DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION
The New South Wales Government Railways employed steam locomotives as a form of traction for one hundred and seventeen years. During this time, a wide variety of machines were developed and many of these survived to enjoy extraordinarily long lives. when diesel and electric power was introduced to the system in the early 1950's the recording of the last years of steam on film took on a new urgency. There had been railway photographers for many years but it was a small band of young members of the Australian Railway Historical Society who found interest, satisfaction and companionship in seeking their disappearing quarry in remote areas of N.S.W as well as on the popular and well trafficked routes. In time they were joined by an ever increasing band as, in the 1960's, the hobby gained a following unknown in the previous decade.
Ron Preston was one of the earlier band who set out to record steam before it passed. This book is the result of twenty years of steam photography, on busy main line and distant branch. It covers the years 1953 to 1972 and in these pages are ' the results of many journeys around the system. In all, some thirty two classes of steam locomotives are illustrated but, if variations within the class are allowed, the count is closer to forty. To avoid repetition, technical details of the engines involved, are tabulated at the end while a map of the system shows the location of each of the one hundred and fifty photographs.
Here is a lasting reminder when the N.S.W.G.R. was truly "In Steam".
