ON THE BACK COVER
Claude C Conner weaves a compelling tale of his World War II experiences in the Pacific aboard the USS Guardfish, one of the Navy's top-scoring submarines. Engagingly written and well documented, this memoir chronicles the submarine's Hollywood-like war actions, including her perilous forays into Japanese-controlled harbors and her daring rescue of personnel from a Japanese-held island as well as a dramatic struggle with the near-catastrophic flooding of Guardfish's conning tower, numerous depth-charge attacks, and much more.
Tragically, the Guardfish was also the only submarine to sink another American warship in a little-known friendly-fire accident against the USS Extractor. This book includes rare firsthand accounts by a dozen Extractor survivors. They offer dramatic descriptions of their encounter with the submarine, the sinking of their ship, their rescue, and their subsequent treatment by Navy officials. Conner, a radar technician aboard the Guardfish, examines the chain of events that led to the regrettable sinking and presents details of the Court of Inquiry that followed, including his testimony as an eyewitness.
