Unlike Britain, there was no Industrial Revolution to encourage railway builders to provide what turned out to be a surfeit of competing lines. When the idea of railways was first considered, many doubts were expressed. A comment in one newspaper stated "The conditions peculiar to Norway's land surface . . . make the extensive use of locomotive railways in this country impossible or unsuitable." The early railways were built primarily for carrying timber and this resulted in a fragmented and sometimes uncoordinated development.
Today, Norges Statsbaner (NSB) operate from the southern coast of the country, to north of the Arctic Circle. The system covers over 4,000 km (about 2,500 miles) - much of it single track - with about 775 tunnels and over 3,000 bridges. Only about a half of the track is on the level - the steepest main line gradient is 1 in 461/2 - and over three quarters of the mileage involves curves, many of them sharp. Despite these handicaps, at the beginning of the 1990s, NSB carries annually about 37 million passengers (in a country with a total population of about 4.5 million), and 20 million tonnes of goods, of which about half is iron ore on Ofotbanen into Narvik.
