Preface
THE NORTHERN PACIFIC Railway Company was the second transcontinental railroad line to be chartered by Congress. While this enterprise lacked the fame and luster of the rival Central Pacific-Union Pacific transcontinental railroad project, the building and operation of the Northern Pacific was an immense enterprise, having a life span of 100 years.
The Northern Pacific operated nearly 6,700 miles of road through eight states and the Province of Manitoba. It was the first of the Northern transcontinental lines to be completed, having been opened for through traffic from St. Paul, Minnesota, to Portland, Oregon, in 1883. The route came to be known as the "Main Street of the Northwest."
In addition to the parent road, the NP developed many subsidiary lines, acquiring smaller railroads from Wisconsin to Washington, and expanded into land development, coal mining, oil exploration, and highway transportation. The Northern Pacific was one of the most active railroads to introduce and popularize new locomotive types and was also engaged in the improvement and rebuilding of existing locomotives. The company pioneered in such areas as compounding, improved smokeboxes, and special purpose fireboxes. But perhaps the peak of the Northern Pacific's motive power development came in the 1925 to 1945 period when it enthusiastically embraced the concept of the "modern" steam locomotive. This concept was characterized by integrally cast steel frames and cylinders, a large firebox emphasizing horsepower at speed rather than low-speed pulling power, pressure lubrication systems, and scientifically balanced reciprocating parts. The NP became the major advocate of the "modern" steam locomotive in the Northwest.
The major purpose of this volume is to tell the story of the NP's "modern" steam locomotives, to present the reader a background history of how the railroad was developed, built, and operated, and to describe the route where these unique locomotives labored.
This book began as a research project by Robert L. Frey which culminated in a 1970 doctoral dissertation at the University of Minnesota. At this same time Lorenz P. Schrenk and Robert E. Sloan, both of whom had collected information on the Northern Pacific over many years, shared their interest in the history and the locomotives of the road. Discovering Frey's dissertation, Schrenk and Sloan were quick to appreciate the depth of research Frey had accomplished in earning his degree. Sloan made the initial contact with Frey, which led to an agreement to consolidate material and work together in order to produce a history of the Northern Pacific and its locomotives. Robert Sloan eventually withdrew from the project because of heavy professional commitments.
In the preparation of this study, a wide range of materials was consulted. Between the years 1967 and 1969 Frey studied the records of the Northern Pacific's Mechanical I)epartment, as well as the records of related departments. Before Frey began his research, this material had not been examined systematically by any other historian. During the 1970's both authors continued to study the Northern Pacific's records (now housed at the Minnesota Historical Society). The search for additional historical material was broadened to include local historical societies, newspapers, and personal interviews with former employees. Based on primary source documents, Frey completed the basic text for this volume. Schrenk was actively engaged in searching and collecting historical photographs, preparing captions, and compiling the locomotive roster information. Both authors contributed additional material through several generations of revisions to the manuscript. Frey edited the final manuscript and Schrenk managed the overall project and made contact with the publisher.
This book will be followed by two other volumes detailing the earlier steam motive power and the diesel days of the Northern Pacific Railway. It is hoped that these volumes will serve as a living record of the NP and its motive power prior to its merger into the Burlington Northern System.
