Following the driving of its "last spike" on September 8, 1883, at Gold Creek, Montana Territory, the Northern Pacific Railway, as the First Northern Transcontinental, inaugurated passenger train service between the Middle West and the Pacific Northwest. However, it was not until April 29, 1900, that its principal transcontinental passenger train gained national attention. On that date, the North Coast Limited was inaugurated between the Twin Cities and Portland via Spokane, Seattle, and Tacoma. It was the first electrically-lighted passenger train in northern transcontinental service between these terminals. At first, the North Coast Limited was in summer service only, and each eight-car consist included a "Ten-Wheeler" steam locomotive, a dynamo-baggage car, a Railway Post Office car, a dormitory smoker-coach, a "First Class" coach, a Tourist 16 sections sleeping car, a dining car, a Standard 14 sections and one drawing room sleeping car, and a library-lounge-observation car.
A feature writer for the Wonderland, a national travel journal at that time, commented in his story as follows, "Looking over the current transcontinental passenger train schedules, the premier train is Northern Pacific's North Coast Limited. Featuring an observation-library car with barber and bath, an exquisite dining car, and restful sleeping cars, it is the epitome of luxurious transcontinental travel. The North Coast Limited also runs a swift, 60-hour schedule between St. Paul and the Pacific Coast, and there are numerous connections from and to Chicago."
In a historical brochure that commemorated an anniversary of North Dakota statehood, the writer commented, "If building the Northern Pacific was an exercise in roughing it, traveling on its new North Coast Limited was not, at least not for its wealthy passengers. Pullman cars offered sumptuous accommodations, while chefs and waiters turned out multiple-course meals equal to those served at fancy hotels. Rail travel across the Northern Tier of States had become a new avenue of pleasure, where the only impediments were dust and soot."
Because of its popularity that was gained during the 1900 and 1901 Summers, the North Coast Limited became a year-around, daily Twin Cities-Portland via Butte, Spokane, Seattle, and Tacoma transcontinental train as Northern Pacific Nos. 1 & 2 during 1902. Its consists during the winter months remained as originally assigned. However, in order to take advantage of travel to and from Yellowstone National Park, the North Coast Limited's consists included through Twin Cities-Yellowstone National Park sleeping cars, which were operated via Livingston beginning with the 1903 Park Season. Northern Pacific also established its Gardiner Gateway with the opening of its new passenger train station at this North Entrance to Yellowstone Park. In addition, the Northern Pacific began to assign new Pacific steam locomotives to the North Coast Limited . They were designed to haul longer passenger trains through the Rocky and Cascade Mountains as well as at faster speeds out in the open country of the Midwest prairies.
