INTRODUCTION
How did someone who was born and raised in New York City and worked on its infrastructure for 40 years become an ardent fan of the Northern Pacific - a northwest U.S. trunk line whose nearest rail was more than 1,000 miles away? It all goes back to Matt Herson's earliest railroad impressions of the New Haven, New York Central, and NYC Subway System in the Bronx. What he witnessed made a deep impression, and accordingly he grew up very fond of electrified railroad operation. Through reading railroad magazines and books, his interest expanded beyond the Big Apple, and he found the electrified operations of the Milwaukee Road especially intriguing.
A skilled rail photographer by the mid-1960s, Matt made his first trip out to the Milwaukee Road's electrified territory in 1965. While Montana was beautiful, the problem quickly became the dearth of trains on Milwaukee's Pacific Extension. Two trains a day each way left a lot of time to explore neighboring railroads, which in this case mostly meant the Northern Pacific. The NP was busy with several streamliners and plenty of freight action - this was the "Main Street of the Northwest". While not electrified, its attractive paint and intriguing diesel roster soon hooked Matt and the NP soon became his favorite railroad.
Annual trips out to the Northwest enhanced his interest and membership in the Northern Pacific Railroad Historical Association and an "NP in Bozeman Pass Montana" model railroad quickly followed. Matt has authored a number of articles on NP equipment published by the NPRHA. Trackside along the Northern Pacific, he recorded all things NP on color slides from majestic shots of streamliners in the mountains to lowly maintenance-of-way equipment. Matt's NP color photography is second to none. All photos herein were taken by Matt Herson, except those marked from his collection. We're honored to present the work of this true Northern Pacific fan for your enjoyment.
