INTRODUCTION
When my New England relatives expressed surprise that  there were lighthouses on the Great Lakes, I could easily
forgive them, but I have always found it hard to understand my Michigan friends and colleagues who express the same sentiments. Atlantic and Pacific coast lighthouses are well-known in part because they are often the subject of books and postcards. Great Lakes lighthouses, comparatively speaking, have generally been neglected and ignored. When Russell McKee asked me several years ago to consider writing a book on Great Lakes lighthouses, for the Michigan Heritage Series, I was already primed for the project.
This book gives the reader a general history of the U.S. Lighthouse Service and its descendants, as they functioned on the Great Lakes; a brief summary of the changing design of lighthouses and the equipment that produces their beacons; and finally, a history of the lighthouse keepers and their families. The bulk of the volume outlines the histories of more than one hundred and sixty individual lighthouses. We hope that this book will encourage everyone living in the Great Lakes area to learn more about our lighthouses and other aspects of the region's rich maritime history. There are dozens of excellent museums in the region, with marvelous collections relating to navigation on these "inland seas."
This is not intended to be a comprehensive history of all the lighthouses ever built on the Great Lakes. We do not consider Canadian lighthouses, which merit a separate study. This book looks only at the American lights of the Upper Great Lakes, but does include a few located in the western end of Lake Erie, since these are accessible to Michiganders. We deliberately decided not to write about the hundreds of lights that no longer exist.
This volume is both a history of and a guide to the lighthouses on the Great Lakes that people can still view, and, in many cases, can even visit the interiors. The remarkable beauty produced by the man-made structures in their Great Lakes settings can be seen in the outstanding color photographs Ann and John Mahan have created for this book. We hope that it will spur readers to see these lighthouses in person.
