Introduction
This is the sixth and final volume in a series of photo albums covering the Northeast Railroad Scene in the 20 or so years before Conrail. As we have mentioned in previous volumes, these are not a complete history of the lines covered, only a brief pictorial look at each railroad. Given the size of the Penn Central, it would be impossible to cover it all in a book of this type.
Since we base this series on the twenty-year period prior to Conrail, and the Penn Central was so short-lived, we will also take a look at the components of the PC. We will take a look at operations of the Pennsylvania Railroad. the New York Central, and the New Haven Railroad before devoting space to the Penn Central.
There will be geographical areas overlooked in this book but we will cover as much as possible in order to bring back some pleasant memories. We have tried to limit coverage of the areas to which everyone goes and bring you some shots of lesser visited sites. As in previous volumes we will lean heavily on "action" or "scenic" photos rather that roster shots.
Let us now take a look at this railroad of diverse motive power from steam, which was still running in the mid 50's, to the large variety of diesel power, and the electric operations. We hope you will enjoy this nostalgic journey to the not too distant past.
