North Western Lines C&NW is issued quarterly, Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall by the Chicago & North Western Historical Society. FRONT COVER: James Neubauer sought out Chicago Great Western's Winston Tunnel in September of 1963. He witnessed westbound train 143's passage through the tunnel, "its advance announced through a bricklined loudspeaker half-a-mile long," as the photographer quipped. The cloud of smoke could dispell the dubious assertion that diesel power obviated the need for forced ventilation through the bore.
