FRONT COVER: C&NW predecessor Fremont Elkhorn & Missouri Valley's little narrow gauge train is dwarfed by Bald Mountain in the distance in this view made by famous western photographer William Henry Jackson in the year 1900. High up in the Black Hills, west of Deadwood, South Dakota, his special train pauses in a cut before traversing a rather large fill.
