The history of North America's railroads is, to a certain extent, the history of North America's people and their desire to bind their continent with bands of steel for the purpose of advancing their civilization and their standard of living. Historian Oscar Skelton compared the building of North America's rail network to the building of Europe's great cathedrals half a millennium before. In both cases it is hard to imagine the energy of the people who undertook such tasks with the limited technology available to them. In both cases it took the energy and commitment of thousands of people over many years to complete these monumental tasks, and it took the exceptional vision of a few to conceive and organize these projects. In the case of the great cathedrals, the names of the visionaries are lost, but in the case of the railroads the names of the empire builders are an indelible part of North America's history.
The pioneer American railroad built for general public use was the Baltimore & Ohio, chartered in 1827. The construction of numerous other roads was begun shortly after work commenced on the B&O.
Americans began to build locomotives in 1830 at about the same time that they became involved in railroad building. The English locomotives were expensive and were not well adapted to the light rails steep grades, and sharp curves of the American tracks. The traffic conditions caused the engines and cars to be built according to designs different from those followed in Great Britain, and the differences in equipment set the tone for the development of American rail cars for the next century.
This beautiful album tells the story of all the great railroads that unite North America, from the Pennsylvania Railroad and the New York Central in the East, the Union Pacific and Southern Pacific in the West, the Great Northern and Canadian National in the North, to the Baltimore & Ohio and Southern Railway in the South. Illustrated with over 300 photographs, many in color, North American Steam: A Photographic History takes the reader on a photographic journey through the golden age of railroading.
