FORWARD
This book deals with all locomotives produced in the United States and Canada, over fifty tons, in the time period Jan. 1, 1968 thru mid 1989. Excluding export locomotives, other than Canada and Mexico
The style of reference used in this book traces each locomotive, or as in most cases, a number of locomotives ordered at one time, to there present owners or untimely demise. Where as, most books of this nature, list locomotives, using there present owner and number, we have listed them from there original production numbers.
Some locomotive orders which overlap Jan 1, 1968, will be shown from the original production date. Many of the large class 1 roads have sold or rebuilt locomotives of certain types, usually fifteen years old or older, and where this has occurred, these orders have been broken down into more easily understood numbers. In some instances where large classes of locomotives have been sold or rebuilt, reference is made only to what class they have been moved to, rather than individual numbers, especially when the numbering has been mixed.
Although, some of these records may not be complete, this book is not designed to give a complete history of each locomotive, but where space permits and the information was available, I have included as much as possible. The Book is designed as a reference tool, with pictures as a visual guide. The first three chapters are arranged by owner and number. The fourth chapter is the same material as the first three, but, arranged by builder and production date. The production run will be shown at the top of each category of locomotive. The total number of units built in the period 1968 thru mid 1989, per locomotive type, appears in the locomotive index, page 220. The pictures will correspond to the information on that page, generally the line of information just above or below.
In using this book, if looking up a locomotive by its road number, and it is not shown under that company Refer to chapter 4, and look under the type of locomotive, as the locomotive may have been traded or purchased 2nd hand. Also, chapter 4 will have more detailed histories. Remember, all locomotives are cataloged by their original road number.
This book was conceived when, in trying to look up builders dates to label locomotive slides, many of which you see in this book, many hours were being spent rummaging thru various rosters and books. So, why couldn't all this information be in just one book Well now, it is!
