Introduction
Since its formation, the Norfolk and Western Railway has remained singularly dedicated to one economic mission: the transport of bituminous coal from collieries in mountainous West Virginia to markets miles distant beyond the Ohio River, or along the Atlantic littoral. The volume of this traffic and the many geographic obstacles to be surmounted in its profitable movement forced the N&W to become acutely aware of the necessity for powerful steam loco-motives at a very early date. Increasing business, particularly the upsurge con-current with World War One focused the N&W's attention on new design criteria, namely, serviceability and ease of maintenance. The hard times of the thirties made these two virtues actual necessities in the eyes of the railway's management, and even more inventive genius was applied to the refinement of the reciprocating steam locomotive.

The results of this effort are well known to any rail enthusiast. In the five-year span between 1936 and 1941, the N&W's own Roanoke Shops turned out the most powerful dual-service articulateds with six driving axles, the ultimate refinement of the 2-8-8-2 mallet compound, and the most powerful 4-8-4's ever built. Furthermore, the railway's management refused to curtail experimentation and improvement simply because steam traction was no longer fashionable, and the N&W pioneered in the development of coal-fired steam power as late as 1954!

The Norfolk and Western's unusual dedication and continued faith gave rail-fans one final chance CO see big steam at work on a major trunk-line railroad. as late as 1960. If you witnessed steam% final drama, we hope you find this book a fitting remembrance of the last act on the Blue Ridge.
