Introduction
I GREW UP ON THE NORFOLK & WESTERN in Tidewater Virginia. As a boy the sounds of passing steam trains drifted through the night air into my bedroom window and lulled me to sleep. The low-toned Class Js sounded like tugboat whistles on near-by Chesapeake Bay.
The N&W became an integral part of my youth. My first railroad photograph was made on a Boy Scout camping trip at the end of WWII, showing a newly home-built Class A, westbound at Yadkin (inset), on the edge of the Great Dismal Swamp.
All pictures are of the actual item. There may be reflection from the lights in some photos. We try to take photos of any damage.
