Norfolk & Western's Shenandoah Valley Line by Mason Y. Cooper
The Norfolk & Western Historical Society is proud to present this in-depth history of the N&W Shenandoah Valley Line, from its very beginnings in 1870 to the creation of Norfolk Southern in 1982.
Authored by N&WHS member
Mason Y. Cooper, this book tells the complete story of a railroad that surmounted almost unbelievable odds to become a reality, reaching prosperity only after being acquired by the
Norfolk & Western Railway.
With Norfolk Southern's acquisition of Conrail, the line today becomes a major north-south artery for the railroad.
On The Cover:
Two Shenandoah Valley youths in a cut-down 1906 Model T Ford race the train in the 1920's. They have the temporary advantage over Norfolk and Western Railway's train #71 as it rolls off Bridge No.634 at Overall Creek in the early 1920s.
The trestle marks the boundary of Warren County and as the race continues, the task becomes rougher as the railroad takes a shortcut over several high trestles.
