Norfolk Southern's motive power fleet is about to undergo a major change with the inclusion of a portion of Conrail's diversified fleet of locomotives. Fourteen new models - EMD E8, GP15-1, SD45-2, GP40-2, SD38, SD60M, SD601. SD80MAC, SW1001 and GE B23-7R, B40-8, C30-7A, C32-8, C40-8W - will be added, in addition to two new slug models.
This listing of Norfolk Southern locomotives is current as of October 12, 1998, and shows a base NS motive power fleet of 2,241 locomotives plus 1,127 former Conrail locomotives.
In August 1998, NS completed a locomotive fleet numbering plan for the CR units that fully integrates the two fleets. While no NS units will be renumbered, all of Conrail's locomotives, with the exception of the SW1001s and SW1500s, and the SD70s built before the actual merger with NS-compatible road number. will be renumbered. Please note that no Conrail locomotives have been renumbered as of the press date and the assigned numbers could be changed. NS will acquire locomotives and/or slugs from all major Conrail prede- Erie Lackawanna, Jersey Central, Lehigh Valley, New York Central, Penn Central, Pennsylvania, and Reading. as well as a handful of units from Indiana Harbor Belt, Indianapolis Union, Monongahela, and Pennsylvania-Reading Seashore Lines.
The retirements section of this book lists the initial disposition of each unit retired between 1995 and 1998 and continues where our previous book, Norfolk Southern Motive Power Review 1982-1994, ended.
