LOOKING BACK WHILE MOVING FORWARD
As we flipped the page on our calendar today, it stared back at us and said July 4, 2013. My, how time flies when you're having fun. We're finding it hard to believe more than a year has passed since we witnessed one of the greatest railroad events of our time. Those who attended Norfolk Southern's Heritage Locomotive "Family Portrait" in North Carolina last year know what we mean.
Who among us thought something of this magnitude could ever take place? We certainly didn't and we still can't believe our eyes when a modern locomotive rolls by in colors we remember from years past. A Tuscan red ES44AC at Enola in calendar year 2013? A Virginian painted SD70ACe in the yard at Mullens? Impossible by today's standards, but thanks to an inspired artist, a CEO with incredible vision and a railroad with pride in its roots, a dream became reality.
Norfolk Southern's Heritage Locomotive Program has turned the railroad universe upside down. Don't think so? Consider this. Who among us hasn't made a sleep deprived, long drive with missed meals for the chance to photograph one of these beauties? How many crews have arrived on the job saying I want THAT ONE to lead my train today? How many of these colorful units have travelled west of the Mississippi since their release? Message delivered. Case closed.
Wick Moorman and the employees of Norfolk Southern, stand tall. There have been many new friendships created as a result of these locomotives and they have inspired great pride throughout your Corporation. The Heritage Program has been more successful than you ever could have imagined. And for that, we thank you.
