These units were ideally suited for climbing N\u0026amp;W's mountainous operating profile, as well as for traversing numerous heavy-duty branch lines in West Virginia that serviced mine loadouts. The other half of N\u0026amp;W's traffic consisted of merchandise shipments, primarily in the Midwest. The same six-axle units moved this traffic with the assistance of four-axle GP4Os and GP38ACs. By December 31, 1994, the number of units had been cut to 2,056, as most of the older end-cab switchers, and numerous GPIs and 9s departed the roster.
