DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION
Fall has come early to the hills of West Virginia as a westbound empty coal train has just exited Cooper Tunnel and is crossing the bridge which spans the Bluestone River, the town of Cooper, and the Norfolk and Western's Bluestone-Widemouth Branch. The tunnel. built in 1902, is 697.5 feet in length and was part of the railway's massive upgrading at the
turn of the century to handle the increase in traffic over the Pocahontas Division. The trestle which replaced a single track span, is over 700 feet in length and today, it carries one the endless strings of empty coal trains returning from the dock at Lambert's Point, Virginia and is headed back to the mines.
The motive power is a pair of ALCO Century 628s, with "Four Aces", #1111, on the point. Delivered to the railroad in 1965. these two units were part of a thirty unit fleet that would spend their short lives in and out of storage. Hard on the rails, and orphans on a railroad dominated by EMD and General Electric locos. they were leased in 1973 to the power short Chicago and Northwestern Railroad. Later purchased by the C&NW, they would eventually find a home in ore service in Upper Michigan.
The branch local has drawn #300. an ALCO RS3 model. With twelve empties in tow, #300 is headed for the Flipping Creek Branch and the Pocahontas Fuel Company at Goodwill, West Virginia. Normal power for the branch jobs would be one of the numerous EMD GP9s that inhabited the roster. But today, an RS3 on its way from Ohio to Norfolk, VA has been assigned the task.
Artist Robert Karsten has recaptured the feel of the coal hauling Norfolk and Western during the booming Sixties when the big-footed ALCOs ruled the mainline and the "Blue" scheme was in its hayday.
