Norfolk and Western Magazine is published monthly (except August) at Roanoke Va. Vol59 #10. About the cover, October 16 was a day that meant a lot to railroad employees- particularly veterans- and to others who remember the exciting years of steam railroading-
The steam age on the NW ended more than 20 years ago- but last month, one of our railroad's most famous steam engines found a new lease on life- J-Class steam passenger engine Number 611 is coming out of retirement, and as explained on pages 5 and 6 in this issue of the Magazine- may see excursion duty-
The front cover shows the bullet-like 611 as it appeared after its construction in 1950- Back cover shows part of the crowd who came to the Roanoke Transportation Museum to see 611 on its way to Southern Railways steam locomotive shop at Birmingham, Ala.
