N&W Norfolk and Western Employee Magazine 1981 July Now Hes Done It!
Norfolk and Western Magazine is published monthly (except August) at Roanoke Va. Vol59 #7. About the cover, When a photographer accompanied Arthur M. Bixby to the Roanoke Transportation Museum to take a photograph for this month's front cover, he made a mistake.
Spotting a bright blue. grey and gold diesel electric locomotive, he asked Mr. Bixby to pose in front of the colorful engine. The engine is no slouch: it was the 10.000 locomotive built by General Electric, had a top speed of 98 miles per hour, and had pulled the renowned Wabash Cannonball.
Nonetheless, Mr. Bixby was taken aback. "I have no use for diesel engines," he stated scornfully, and moved on to a steam engine. That simple gesture says a lot for his love of an age past. The story of this highly respected steam age gentleman begins on page 2.
The locomotive he picked is Number 6, an NW Class G-1, Consolidation type with 2.8-0 wheel arrangment and tractive effort of 29,300 pounds. which saw both main line freight service and light duty on branch lines before taken out of service in 1954.
It was built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1897, and Mr. Bixby says, "It's just a few years older than I am."
