Norfolk and Western Magazine 1978 February N&W Employee Strive to Save Energy
N&W Norfolk and Western Employee Magazine 1978 February Employees Strive to Save Energy
Norfolk and Western Magazine is published monthly (except August) at Roanoke Va. Vol56 #2. About the cover, This month's cover is in black and white and the number of pages is again reduced in response to the NW's lower business level during the coal strike.
The two engines were selected from several in old NW files, one because there is a story with it, the other because there is not; we would like to know more. At bottom is an antique named "Babe" photographed in 1889 at Parkersburg, W. Va. where it ran up and down the main street hauling stone for the Wood County Courthouse then being built. The engine was originally named "Mabel", but the real Mabel changed boy friends and the engineer renamed it "Babe". The engine was built in 1889 for the Ohio River Railroad which was later taken over either by the B&O or the Pennsylvania.
The top photo is an old "S" class switching engine with a swallowtail tender operating in Roanoke yards in 1890. Beyond that we know nothing and we hope engine buffs in our readership will set us aright. We cannot identify any of the people shown in either picture.
