Norfolk and Western Magazine is published monthly (except August) at Roanoke Va. Vol55 #10 About the cover, The NW offers a sound, well-balanced fringe-benefits program to its employees. The program covers a broad range including some of the benefits illustrated on this month's cover such as life insurance program, medical coverage, educational assistance and sufficient and modern tools with which to perform railroad work.
Gary Carter, who has been with the NW since 1972, took the cover picture, focusing on some of the fringe benefits offered by the railway. Models for the cover photo are the following railroaders: starting with secretary seated at desk in foreground and going clockwise - Pat Smith of the Freight Car Shop - East End Shops; Electrician Joe P. Brown of Shatters Crossing Locomotive Department; General Foreman J. L. Elshire at blackboard; Car Repairer R. L. Thomas of Shatters Crossing Car Department with Nurse Mary Margaret Slicer of railway Medical Department; and Chief Clerk Johnny Johnson of Shatters Crossing Car Department.
Photographer Carter is a sheetmetal worker with the railway, making use of his camera and creative talents in his spare time. Mr. Carter has entered the NW Art and Photo Show in which he won an honorable mention award and numerous other shows such as the prestigious Virginia Professional Association show where he won two blue ribbons and one red.
