Norfolk and Western Magazine is published every six weeks at Roanoke Va. About the cover, One of several NW classrooms on wheels visited Roanoke Shops recently as part of its routine schedule. B. J. Rhodes, instructor in red coat, is explaining to Machinist Apprentice Jerome R. Bonds, of Roanoke Shops Locomotive Department, NW's locomotive air brake equipment. The car, NW Equipment Maintenance Instruction Car 401, is a converted air-conditioned high-cube box car. Two instructors live aboard. A small classroom seating 24 people is behind the camera.
The raised platform permits students to see actual operation of various mechanical components. Hinged parts of the platform along both sides lift up to provide passageway to rear and also to expose more operating equipment. This instruction car travels regularly to Roanoke, Norfolk, Bellevue and Decatur for classes. Some instruction periods are held in wee hours of the morning to teach late shift employees. Classes run during employees' regular working hours. Car 401 is one of several NW instruction cars designed to upgrade company employees' skills and to teach maintenance and operation of more sophisticated equipment as it is introduced.
