Norfolk and Western Magazine is published every six weeks at Roanoke Va. About the cover, Photographer Jim Sutliff shot the cover picture on a misty spring-like morning when the Dunstanburgh Castle (large ship nearest the shore) was loading a single-ship record 106,444 tons of coal for the Netherlands on March 2 at Pier 6. The same ship returned for a load of 106,257 tons March 31 and it will continue to make the Norfolk-Holland run and may break the record by a narrow margin again. The ship nearest the end of Pier 6 is the World Navigator which loaded 32,054 tons after taking aboard a partial load at the C&O's Newport News piers earlier.
Most of the export tonnage from Norfolk is used overseas in the manufacture of steel. Projections by the National Petroleum Council indicate that coal exports of this type by 1985 will reach 138 million tons, compared to the present total of less than 60 million tons.
NW's export tonnage this year is expected to be about 24 million tons. Demand for coking coal used In steel making is high around the world. Pier 6's maximum capacity is estimated at about 36 million tons a year. As NW adds 100-ton hoppers to its fleet and retires older 50 and 70-ton cars, the effect on Pier 6's capacity is noticeable. Thus, the Pier's record for number of cars dumped was set in 1964 when 1,825 cars were dumped in 24 hours. The tonnage handled that day was 123,343. While the cars handled has never been exceeded in nine years, the tonnage totals have been broken often. The record tonnage was last set on February 3, 1973 -137,708 tons requiring "only" 1,575 cars to be dumped.
