Norfolk and Western Magazine 1959 June N&W Employee All-Purpose Bituminous Coal
N&W Norfolk and Western Employee Magazine 1959 June All-Purpose Bituminous Coal on the Move
Norfolk and Western Magazine is published every month in Roanoke, Va. THE PICTURE of the coal train on the front cover of this issue is a good representation of the capacity of our railroad to move heavy freight traffic. This train, pictured westbound on the Columbus District, about 20 miles west of Portsmouth (near Sargents), is moving a huge tonnage of coal to Columbus for further transportation to the Great Lakes and the industries, power plants and other users of the Midwest. As the caption on the cover states, it is all-purpose bituminous coal of the finest quality. So, when it comes to supplying energy for the surging growth of America, the Norfolk and Western can really deliver the goods in abundant volume-and with prompt and efficient service.
The crew in charge of the train pictured was composed of: Conductor John R. Green, Engineer 0. L. Miller, Fireman D. E. Milliron, Brakeman John H. Spaulding and B. E. Patrick.
